Changing a finished product image without the source file

Updated · 4 min read

Short answer

The most common changes after a product image is final are a new price, a different promo badge, moving the product, or removing a decoration. If you only have the exported JPG or PNG, split it into text, product, decor, and background layers, change only the layer you need, and export a PNG for the store or a PSD for your designer.

Can you edit a product image without the source file?

The source file is lost, sits with an agency, or never existed because the image was AI-generated. With only the exported image, the usual fix is patching: cover the old price with a block of color and type the new one on top. Do that a few times and the edges, shadows, and background texture stop lining up.

Splitting first turns the image back into product, text, decor, and background. The background is already filled in, so every piece can be rearranged on a clean base.

Move the price tagDrag the layer the tag is on

A full update, start to finish

  1. Upload the image

Drop the final JPG or PNG into the workspace, up to 30MB.

  2. Split with named elements

Click “Split layers” (拆分图层), choose named elements (指定元素), and list the parts you will change, such as “product, price badge, headline”.

  3. Change those layers

Double-click to open the full-screen editor. Update the text, move the tag, resize the product, and leave the rest alone.

  4. Export

Export a PNG to upload straight to your store, or a PSD if a designer will keep working on it.

Things to watch for

  • Check the product edges first. Clear bottles, reflective packaging, and fuzzy materials are the most likely to need attention.
  • Do not use Edit to change how the product itself looks. Colors and details should match what customers receive.
  • New text stays editable, so the next price change does not need another split.
  • The exported PNG keeps the original size. Marketplaces have their own size and text rules, so check them before uploading.

FAQ

Can I upload the edited image straight to my store?

The exported PNG has the same size as the original, so it can go straight up. If the marketplace has size or text-coverage rules, check against them first.

Can I make several versions from one image?

Yes. Duplicate layers in the full-screen editor (⌘J) to try different layouts, or export each version separately. The original layers stay put.

Will the old price show through once it is hidden?

No. Text is split onto its own layer and the background underneath is filled in, so you can hide the old text and write the new price in the same spot.
